Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Food insecurity is a significant challenge facing many regions in Nigeria, including Logo Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State. This region, predominantly known for its agricultural activities, has seen growing food insecurity, exacerbated by conflict, climate change, and economic instability. The lack of access to food not only affects the nutritional well-being of the population but also contributes to rising tensions and escalates conflicts. According to Olusegun (2023), food scarcity is often a key driver of social unrest, as competition for resources can lead to violent confrontations between different groups. This study seeks to examine how food insecurity in Logo LGA has contributed to conflict escalation, exploring the links between resource scarcity and violent interactions among communities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Logo LGA has experienced growing food insecurity due to a combination of factors, including poor harvests, farmer-herder conflicts, and disruption of agricultural activities by banditry. This situation has created a fertile ground for conflict, as communities compete for limited resources, including arable land and access to water. The connection between food insecurity and conflict has yet to be fully explored in this context, and this study aims to address this gap by examining how food shortages in Logo LGA have contributed to the intensification of local conflicts.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze the relationship between food insecurity and conflict escalation in Logo LGA.

  • To assess the socio-economic consequences of food insecurity in the region.

  • To recommend strategies for addressing food insecurity as a means of reducing conflict in Logo LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How does food insecurity contribute to conflict escalation in Logo LGA?

  • What are the socio-economic impacts of food insecurity on the local population in Logo?

  • What interventions can reduce food insecurity and mitigate conflict in Logo LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • H₀: Food insecurity does not significantly contribute to conflict escalation in Logo LGA.

  • H₁: Food insecurity significantly contributes to conflict escalation in Logo LGA.

  • H₂: Socio-economic interventions aimed at reducing food insecurity will decrease conflict in Logo LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the link between food insecurity and conflict in a region where both challenges are prevalent. By identifying the impact of food scarcity on social unrest, the study aims to inform policy decisions regarding conflict prevention, food security programs, and community interventions in Logo LGA and similar conflict-prone regions.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Logo LGA in Benue State, specifically examining the relationship between food insecurity and local conflicts. Limitations include the difficulty of obtaining accurate data on food security, as well as potential biases in reporting conflict-related issues due to the sensitivity of the topic.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Food Insecurity: A situation where individuals or communities do not have reliable access to sufficient quantities of affordable, nutritious food.

  • Conflict Escalation: The process by which a conflict becomes more intense, leading to increased violence and disruption within a community or region.

  • Resource Scarcity: The condition in which resources, such as food, water, and land, are insufficient to meet the needs of a population.
